30-inch widescreen HD CRT released by Sony in 2004. This model contains Sony's SFP (Super Fine Pitch) Trinitron tube, which delivers greatly improved picture detail. It also has a digital ATSC tuner for receiving modern television broadcasts.
By default, this TV introduces input lag at all input resolutions. However, for early model units only, by setting "HDPT" to 0 in the service menu, 1080i and 540p signals are internally switched to bypass the digital scaling circuitry. This results in zero input lag for 1080i and 540p signals only.
Chassis Revision
Halfway through 2005, Sony made a major revision to the DA-4 chassis used by this TV. This revision removed numerous ICs, and changed to an entirely new digital video processing board, with a newly designed "one-chip" DRC/MID IC. This new digital board also eliminated the circuitry responsible for enabling HDPT. Therefore, only the early model XS955 and HS420 units are able to display lag-free 1080i and 540p signals.
Sony issued a new service manual for these revised models, and included the serial number range for the units which use the revised DA-4 chassis. The serial number ranges for the original and revised versions of this model are as follows:
Revision | Serial Number Range |
---|---|
Original version (HDPT capable) | 4,000,001 - 4,500,000 and 8,000,001 - 8,500,000 |
Revised version (NOT HDPT capable) | 4,500,001 to 4,999,999 |
